Day 10, Monday, June 8, 2026: Stacking layers

Our crew got to work around 7:30-8 after battling some Monday morning blues. The main event of the day was set to be getting and installing pond liners on both our ponds and stacking all kinds of rocks around them. While the Kelowna specialty store opened at 7, we gave them an hour to settle in while the crew was back at digging and cleaning up the edges on the ponds. P2 and D also worked on filling out some of the terraced steps to shape the rest of the garden, as well as lining the terraces with medium heavy rocks.

P called the supply store, and called yet again to no avail. The store personnel, it appeared, were too busy to take phone calls. Here we’d thought that we could order by phone and go pick up the supplies a couple hours later per what the pond store sales folks had told us. We had to change our plans since some people actually have a day job! Y spent another half an hour collecting some rocks to hold the pond liners, while P2 and D continued to haul in more dirt and build out the terraces.

We wrapped up the morning shift early and agreed to reconvene at lunch to go out and visit the pond shop in Kelowna in person.

At lunch time, we made our way to the supply store in Kelowna. Unfortunately, the pond expert was too busy to meet us and answer our questions, so we shuffled between three different sales staffers to order our supplies. We would get our pond liners and under cover landscape fabric only the next day, but we were able to take home all other connectors, adhesives and flexible pipe parts. The crew was somewhat disappointed that we wouldn’t be able to work on setting up the ponds yet another day, and after dropping off the supplies outside as well as a brief discussion about the top waterfall spillway, the group agreed to meet again in the late afternoon.

How do we get the 2.5” pipe to reach the spillway at just the right angle, how high should the spillway sit and how will we get it there? So many considerations to think about! Photo Credit: YS

The crew met outside around 4:30 pm, with the goal to plan out how our waterfall spillway on the upper pond would sit on the rocks, and which rocks would suit the process. We scoured the property and grabbed a few more large yet smooth rocks that had some character to be front and center on our top pond. We collected some more rocks that would fit the second layer before our main layered spill rock or the giant one housing the spillway could be placed.

We thought it best to first add in more gravel before proceeding with heaving in more layers of heavy rocks here.

Meanwhile, it became quite windy and we decided to wrap up the equipment for the day and continue tomorrow, when we will hopefully have the pond liners ready to go! Up next for this day was yummy dinner.
